The main section of Rock Tracks 1981-2020 is an A to Z artist section that shows every artist who ever had a song to make Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart (first published as “Top Tracks” on March 21, 1981) and/or Alternative Rock Tracks chart (first published as “Modern Rock Tracks” on September 10, 1988). The last chart researched for debuts was July 25, 2020, and the final chart researched for peak positions and total weeks on the charts was September 26, 2020.
Complete chart data shown for each chart hit includes:
- Debut – date it first appeared on the chart
- Cht – chart on which it peaked (M = Mainstream / A = Alternative)
- Peak – highest position reached on chart
- Wks – total number of weeks on chart
- Hot Pos – peak position on “Hot 100” chart
- Album Title on which track first appeared
- Album Label & Number
Where applicable, shown beside artist heading are their rankings of all-time on the rock charts and/or in a decade for either chart.
The biggest hit for any artist with 5+ hits is underlined.
Top 3 hits appear under bio for artists with 10-19 hits and the Top 5 hits are listed for artists with 20 or more hits.
The title section is an alphabetical listing of all songs that charted showing for each its artist and highest position(s) and the rock chart(s) on which it appeared.
Mainstream Rock and Alternative Rock each have a chronological listing of all #1s.
